About French Routes - The Atlantic Coast
The Atlantic Coast
This product contains 4 routes in the Atlantic Coast area of France each with engaging audio commentaries which play as you drive and tell you the stories and secrets of the region. The Routes include:
ROUTE 1: RETZ-MACHECOUL-LOGNE, 43 Miles
The Tour Route:
This Tour leads the driver and passengers on a series of discoveries, secrets, and water stories in the land of Grandlieu, Machecoul, and Logne. As you approach each location, a fascinating audio commentary starts automatically on your GPS system.
This route starts in Saint Mars de Coutais , just west of Retz where you can enjoy the magnificent marsh lake by boat, hopping between the shifting islands. Next on our route is Saint Cyr en Retz in the area of Retz which was given its name by Venetian traders who would sail up the river. Long ago, the sea came all the way to this town and this was the port of the bay of Brittany although now the sea is 4 kilometres away. This was a prosperous salt trading area when salt was a highly valuable commodity.
Only a few miles away is Machecoul where you can hear all about the ruins of the Chateau of Gilles de Rais. He lived there in the 15th Century and it was thought that he was a compatriot of Joan of Arc. He had a penchant for alchemy- making Gold from base metals and more worryingly he sought to make gold from the blood of young children. He was eventually arrested for carrying arms in a Church and tried in Nantes for that crime and subsequently hanged.
We’re soon at Saint Lumine de Coutais and beside the largest low-land lake in Europe covering 6,000 hectares in Winter. Finally, we end our route at Passay, a fisherman’s town for thousands of years, beside Grand-Lieu lake. This is a lake which demands great skills and specialism from its fishermen. Hear all about the heritical village which disappeared under water when the inhabitants failed to heed the call of a bishop sent to convert them. That is, all except one man and his family who had converted and were allowed to escape as long as they did not turn around: hear what happened when his wife turned round...according to legend you can still hear the bells of the inundated village.
ROUTE 2: SEASHELL-ROAD, 31 Miles
Discover the seashell road, at your own pace, told by locals.
Start: Port of Tréhiguier
Finish: Le Croisic
ROUTE 3: CHARENTE-MARITIME, 85 Miles
The largest estuary in Europe ahead of you including both the Dordogne and the Garonne.
Start: Point de la Cayenne et Cité de l’huitre, near Marennes
Finish: Plassac
ROUTE 4: ANGOULEME, 102 Miles
A Tour around the Coran Valley and other towns. Discover Angouleme, a City fashioned by the liqueur of the Gods.
Start: Gallo Roman Amphitheatre in Saintes
Finish: The Abbay of FontDouce, mid-way between Saintes and Burie
What Customers are saying about RoadTour...
“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
“I've used the programme a few times now on my travels and it does add a good deal of value
to a journey so I'm very happy with my purchase.”
John, UK
“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey
“Finding atmospheric pubs with good food is always a challenge when you don't know the area and
can be stressful when you're hungry and tired!!”
David, Essex
“Road Tour has found us some great pubs which have made our journeys all the more enjoyable. Every place
it's suggested has been a winner.”
Nikki, Cambridgeshire'
“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
“This is the perfect thing for history buffs - RoadTour really brings boring car journeys to life.”
Guy,
London
“It doesn't intrude on the journey it complements it with just enough information if you
are not stopping at the attraction.”
