Valle Crucis Abbey

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Situated in a lonely position, surrounded only by the rolling green fields of North Wales, Valle Crucis Abbey was the perfect location for the reclusive Cistercian monks who lived there. The ‘Crucis’ in the name of the abbey translates as ‘cross’ and refers to the nearby Pillar of Eliseg. This is a religious monument that was erected in 880AD. Unfortunately it hasn’t stood the test of time as well as the Abbey itself - very little of the pillar is still standing. Compared to many other abbeys, Valle Crucis has survived surprisingly well. It was established eight hundred years ago, and yet it is still possible to see details, like the statuesque columns and intricate stone window frames. These would once have held colourful stained glass. Early in its life the abbey was hit by fire. The scorch marks are still visible on the lower sections of stone. It also suffered during Edward the First’s aggressive campaigns against the Welsh in the late 13th century. It was later repaired and rebuilt. By the 15th Century the abbey had become a luxurious and rich retreat. The abbot (the monk in charge), moved to larger lodgings and even enjoyed a heated apartment! The Abbey was targeted during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, but luckily, perhaps because of its isolated location, was not completely destroyed. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
