Raglan Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Raglan Castle is a truly spectacular structure, with its imposing two towers and huge arched doorway. Although, like most Welsh castles, Raglan was begun in Norman times, it was later developed much further in the 15th century and later, which explains the Tudor architecture and design which can be seen today. Many great noble names enjoyed the luxurious rooms built in Raglan, and admired the impressive ‘Yellow Tower of Gwent’, which was a large tower standing separately from the main castle. Two new courtyards were included in the late 16th century redesign when comfort and extravagance were the order of the day, during a fairly prolonged period of peace. Fortunately, the castle’s original defences were kept in place, and came into use again during the English Civil War. The resident at that time, the Marquess of Worcester, was a prominent royalist and was therefore very much in need of the medieval fortifications during a two month siege that took place at Raglan. However, the Marquess eventually surrendered, and the castle was heavily slighted - much of the luxurious interior being taken as trophy for the victorious parliamentary troops. However, some of the medieval masonry proved too hard to destroy, and thus we are left with the ruins you can see today. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
