Laugharne Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“At first glance, the romantic ruin of Laugharne Castle appears to be an unusual mixture of architecture. Much of the present castle dates back to the thirteenth century and was designed as one of several military strongholds in this part of Wales. It was then transformed into a Tudor mansion by Sir John Perott in 1575. Favoured by Queen Elizabeth I, Sir John was believed to be an illegitimate son of her father King Henry the Eighth – his fiery temper and similar appearance seemed to confirm the rumours. During his successful career, he made many enemies and some blatantly disparaging remarks about the queen which lead to him being imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was found guilty on a charge of high treason but died of ill health before the sentence was carried out. Following his death, parts of the castle were stripped away and it was later attacked by canon fire during the civil war. It was left to ruin but the castle’s beautiful situation next to the Tay estuary and its romantic atmosphere began to be recognised again in the 18th century. Formal gardens were laid and several writers and painters including J.M.W. Turner and Dylan Thomas later used the castle as their inspirational subject. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
