“There has been a castle on top of Dunster Hill for more than a thousand years. Originally the sea swept all the way to its foot and provided a natural defense. When it receded the land was turned into a deer park. Nothing remains of the pre Norman castle but we know it was given to William de Mohun by William the Conqueror: “William de Mohun holds torre and there is his castle” says the Domesday Book. Over the centuries the castle has been significantly rebuilt and changed. In the late 14th century it was sold to the Lutrell family and it remained their home until 1976. Like many castles in this area it became a key stronghold in the English Civil War. In 1642 it was attacked and won by the Royalists, who were loyal to the King. They held it for three years before being overcome by the Parliamentary forces. Orders were given for the castle to be demolished so it couldn’t fall back into Royalist hands. These were largely ignored (though the medieval defenses were dismantled) and the castle was saved. Today the turrets and towers which were added by the Victorians give Dunster a fairytale appearance belying its military past. The garden follows a series of terraces stepping down to the banks of the river Avill. The paths are bordered by rhododendrons, magnolias, fuchsias and hydrangeas. Other semi-tropical plants flourish here due to the mild climate, and it is also home to the national strawberry collection. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
