Huntingtower Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“While some castles are distinguished by a ghostly occupant, Huntingtower Castle has a different claim to fame: it is home to a colony of pipistrelle bats which live here all year round. Originally built in the 15th century and named after the Ruthven family, its name was changed after James VI, not surprisingly, took exception to being held captive by its owners. Some years later, he took his revenge in the usual way for the times - he seized the castle, and the land, executed the wrongdoers and renamed it. Henceforth, it was known as Huntingtower Castle. Its fairly ordinary-looking exterior disguises the fact that it originally took the form of two separate towers just a few metres apart. Some years after it was built, the two towers joined to create a larger residence. Legend has it that Dorothea, the daughter of the first Earl of Gowrie, leapt between the two towers to escape her mother who was about to discover her in her servant lover’s chamber. She was back in her own bed by the time her mother came to check on her but the couple eloped the following night. The distance between the two towers of over nine feet is known as ‘Maiden’s Leap’ to this day. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
