Warkworth Castle & Hermitage

“Did you know that in the 12th century Northumberland was part of Scotland? Warkworth Castle was built out of wood by the King of Scotland’s son. In 1147 Northumbria fell to England and the captured castle was given to Robert Fitzpatrick, an English nobleman. He gradually built up the fortress in stone and today its well preserved ruins are still perched on a steep hillock above the River Coquet. There are outer and inner baileys and an imposing keep. After Robert Fitzpatrick the powerful Percy family owned the castle for a long time. They lost it forever when Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland, was executed by Queen Elizabeth I for plotting an uprising against her. Nearby Warkworth is the 14th century hermitage monastery. It is only accessible by boat, operated by a ferry man. Perhaps that’s why it has survived centuries of political upheaval more peacefully than the castle. Still roofed, its outer walls are made of stone, but the inner walls are carved out of the rock of the river-side. According to legend, Sir Betram of Bothal founded the monastery in grief at having accidentally killed both his brother and his betrothed, Lady Isabel, with a single blow of his sword. In penance he gave away all his lands and lived at the hermitage for the rest of his life. Inside there is an effigy of the Lady Isabel, along with the following inscription above the doorway: "My tears have been my meat night and day". ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
