Treasurer’s House

“Home to the treasurers of York Minster in medieval times, the Treasurer’s House can trick both eye and mind. Tucked behind the Minster, its size, splendour, and contents are a constant surprise to visitors – as are the famous ghost stories of a legless Roman legion marching through the cellars. Also home to one of York's best-loved tea-rooms, The Treasurer’s House contains displays from four different centuries. Additionally, there is a sunken garden and an herb garden, open on selected days for events and plant sales. The earliest section of the present house is Elizabethan but the main part of the building was rebuilt by the Young family in the early 17th century. Legend says that workmen repairing the cellars were terrified by a ghostly group of Roman legionnaires floating past. The apparitions were only visible above the knees. After excavations, it turned out that a Roman road ran beneath the cellar floor just where the soldiers would have marched. Thanks to Frank Green, a wealthy, Yorkshire collector, the opulent interior of the Treasurer’s House reflects many facets of its rich past. He created a series of period rooms - including a medieval-style great hall. Another spooky element is a model ship made of human bones – but it has to stay. Green himself warned that his ghost would return to haunt the site if any furniture was moved! ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
