“Nestled within the enchanting Lakeland valleys, Townend is a remarkable example of local Lake District architecture. The rambling white-walled home was built in 1626 for George Browne - a wealthy gentleman farmer - and his new bride, Susannah Rawlinson. For the next 317 years, different generations of the same family lived there and the house barely changed from the day he first carried her over the threshold. As well as the lime-washed walls and mullioned windows, the outside of the house is characterized by large round chimneys – a precursor to the mill chimneys which were to follow them 200 years later in the industrial revolution. As was common in the days before proper heating, the windows were kept small to keep the warmth in. These make the inside atmospheric, if a little dark! Townend is packed with fascinating objects and furniture built up by the family over the centuries. These include paintings of the family’s sheep by local artist William Taylor Longmire. Much of the wooden furniture and carvings was made by a later George Browne, who headed the family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These include some carved chairs and a spindle-fronted cabinet. The last male heir to Townend, he also wrote the notes which enabled the pretty garden to be recreated as it used to be, to match the unaltered nature of the house. Today volunteers in costume give tours of the house. You may even meet Mr Browne warming himself by the open fire, just as he did 400 years ago. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
