Thornton Abbey

“Medieval work bonuses were slightly more generous than they are today. When William Le Gros did well in battle against the Scots he was given Yorkshire as a reward – well the Earldom of Yorkshire to be precise. William was a generous man and he used some of his new wealth to found Thornton Abbey in 1139. It, too, prospered and became one of the richest abbeys in England. The Augustine monks who lived there obviously felt the need to protect their fortune, as there were big thick walls. Unfortunately they weren’t enough to keep Henry VIII’s hands off their treasure. He dissolved the monasteries in the 1530s and confiscated their property. Since then Thornton Abbey has been left to gently decay. Today it as an atmospheric scene of ruin. Its huge, 14th century, brick gatehouse has proved to be more robust. It was one of the first brick buildings in England and its four tall turrets still stand intact today. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey
