Stott Park Bobbin Mill

“Sitting next to Lake Windermere, Stott Park Bobbin Mill is testimony to the area’s industrial past. It provides an interesting contrast to the serenity and beauty of the lake. The mill was built in 1835 by landowner John Harrison. At its peak, just 25 employees were producing 250,000 bobbins a week. That’s 10,000 per person. The bobbins would be used in the booming Lancashire cotton trade. Cotton would go through a long journey and number of processes before ending up spun around a wooden bobbin. In Victorian times that journey would usually start in the Americas where slaves would work in appalling conditions picking cotton with their bare hands. The raw cotton would be shipped to Britain. Much of it would be processed in the North West due to the local abundance of trees, the principle raw material for bobbins. There were also streams to power the waterwheels which drove the bobbin mills. The thick dust and tremendous noise created by the drive belts, made for a very unpleasant and even dangerous workplace which can still be witnessed by visitors today. Stott Park Mill was still operating until 1971, when it became one of the last of the bobbin mills to close in the Lake District. It had been pushed out of business by a new material, plastic. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
