“The Anglo-Saxon Tower and baptistery of St Peter’s Church are over a thousand years old. They date from 970 AD, although there may have been a wooden church on this spot even longer ago than that. The Tower is rendered in stone stripwork as though it were wood, which is a clue as to its Saxon origins. Another clue is the round headed door into the tower- as opposed to the later, and more common, medieval arched doors. The Anglo-Saxons of the time built a cemetery near to the church. It was excavated during the 20th century. 2800 graves were dug-up and the bones and bodies examined - although it is thought many more remain undisturbed. In the eleven and twelfth centuries, burial fees represented a substantial source of income for the church and were jealously guarded by the minister. The difference between a parish church and a chapel would often be the right to interre the dead. Concentrated burying as happened at St Peter’s could be a real problem as the height of the land would gradually rise requiring retaining walls to keep the cemetery and its bones in place. A new interactive exhibition was installed at the Church - no longer used as a place of worship - in 2007 to help people understand its history and to exhibit some of the skeletons and artifacts from the site. ”
