“Two of England’s most prolific early writers – Ceolfrid and his protégé the Venerable Bede – better known as the Father of English History – made St Paul’s Monastery their home in the 7th century. Bede is perhaps best known for writing The Ecclesiastical History of the English People which was compiled in five volumes of about 400 pages. It’s not just an account of church history either. This is a priceless record of Anglo-Saxon England from the time of Caesar to AD 731 when the book was completed. Not to be outdone, Bede’s mentor Ceolfrid produced three of the earliest Latin versions of the bible - one of which still survives today and is kept in Florence, Italy after originally being earmarked as a gift for the Pope. It’s claimed that Bede even had a hand in compiling these too. Both men helped to cement the Monastery of St Paul’s reputation as the cradle of English literature and a rare centre of excellence outside of Rome. St Paul’s formed part of a unique twin Anglo-Saxon monastery with St Peter’s at Monkwearmouth seven miles away. Ceolfrid was installed as leader of the monastic community and his passion for books paved the way for the largest Anglo-Saxon library in England. St Paul’s was always vulnerable to Viking raids and was attacked in AD 794 and later destroyed by the Danes. Now rebuilt as a church, the Saxon chancel survives and boasts the oldest stained-glass window in the world dating from AD 600. There is a museum called Bede’s World celebrating the life of the monk and the many Anglo-Saxon cultural achievements he presided over. ”
