“Most of the construction of this magnificent wood-framed Tudor mansion was carried out between 1490 and 1598, since when little has changed. There was however a property on this site before, which is recorded in the Doomsday Book, dateing it back to the 11th century. It was the Norris family, who paid for the hall to be built, and kept hold of it until the mid-18th Century. They subsequently played a key role in the history of the area and provided several MPs for Liverpool. The Norris’s were Catholics at a time when the religion was banned and those practicing it were persecuted. At Speke there is a priest hole, where priests would hide from the authorities. There is also a special observation mirror in one of the bedrooms to allow the occupants to have early warning of hostile intrusion. In fact, fines which the family sustained pursuing their Catholic faith were to bring about the gradual decline in their fortunes. They were staunch Royalists during the English Civil War and Parliament confiscated all their estates after it was over. They did manage to recover Speke Hall in 1662, only to abandon it 40 years later in favour of fashionable London. Today the house offers a glimpse into the past including a fully equipped Victorian kitchen and servant’s hall. The extensive gardens offer plenty of variety with a rose garden, moat borders and a stream garden planted in the 19th century. It is flanked by azaleas, hybrid rhododendrons and ferns. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
