“Skipton Castle is one of the finest and best preserved examples of a medieval fortress in England. Two impressive and intimidating drum towers stand guard on either side of the gatehouse. It is estimated that when passing under the gatehouse, one could be fired upon from 20 different places. The castle’s northern side seems especially impregnable, defended by a huge precipice which descends down to a stream below. It was the Clifford family who had been granted the property in 1310 by Edward II. Robert Clifford immediately began work to build up the fortifications at Skipton but, before he could complete it, was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn. Skipton was used as a base for the Royalists during the English Civil War with 300 soldiers garrisoned there. The Parliamentarians placed the castle and its inhabitants under siege but it managed to hold out for three years until surrendering in 1645. Cromwell was worried about the castle so caused it significant damage to prevent any further military use while he controlled the region. After the war, the castle’s condition was remedied by Lady Anne Clifford on the condition that she limit its defensive strength. As a result she made the walls thinner in places and the roofs weak so that they were unable to support cannon; more aesthetically, she also built windows and planted the Yew tree in the centre of the Tudor Courtyard to celebrate the restoration. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
