Sizergh Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Sizergh castle is a romantic blend of the medieval, Elizabethan and Georgian design. At its core is the 14th century defensive pele tower - its 3 metre thick walls designed to protect against attacks from the Scots. If the medieval period gave Sizergh its sturdy exterior, it was the Elizabethans who brought elegance in the form of fine oak paneling and elaborate plaster work to the interior. Especially eye-catching is the State bedroom or Inlaid Chamber as it is known- with its coats of arms, state bed and stained glass windows. Sizergh has been occupied almost 800 years by the same family - the Stricklands - and for the last 400 they changed little in the layout of the house. The Strickland family was often in the thick of political and religious events. They were closely identified with Catholicism, which resulted in huge fines during the Reformation and nearly lead to the loss of the castle and estate. When the court of the catholic King, James II, was exiled to France, the Stricklands had to go with them. Before they fled, they put Sizergh castle in trust with their servants so that it wouldn’t be confiscated by the new King, William of Orange. Outside, the castle is equally interesting and large in scale, reflecting the generous grant of thousands of acres to Sir Walter Strickland by King Edward III. The gardens now include the National Trust’s largest limestone rock garden. ? ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
