Scarborough Castle

“‘Impregnable’ is the adjective that springs to mind when first admiring this impressive fortification with its 12 metre-high walls. Perched on a cliff 300 feet above the bay, Scarborough Castle was built in the 12th century by William Le Gros, a distinguished nobleman. In 1138, William excelled at the Battle of the Standard against the Scots, and was consequently rewarded with the Earldom of Yorkshire. Despite this, the Castle was seized by Henry II who spent substantial sums making improvements including a large square keep. In 1312, Scarborough Castle was in the possession of King Edward II. The son of Edward ‘Longshanks’ who was also known as “The Hammer of the Scots”, he was equally as impressive in physical stature as his father. However, he was less confident, less politically skilful in keeping his Barons on side and altogether too close, for their tastes, to certain men in his entourage - specifically Piers Gaveston, a French Knight. It was to Gaveston that he left the running of the kingdom when travelling in France. Gaveston was soon in trouble and fled to Scarborough Castle whereupon it was placed under siege. With too few supplies he was soon forced to give up and within weeks he was executed by the Barons. Later, the Castle was attacked twice in the Civil War- being captured by the Parliamentarians on the 2nd attempt and mostly destroyed. Its thick walls were again tested in the 1st world war when two German ships bombarded it and the town with 500 shells. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
