“Surrounded by elegant Victorian gardens and woodland, Rufford Old Hall is one of Lancashire finest 16th century homes. The soul of this classic Tudor home is the Great Hall with its impressive decorative features. The hall is decorated with intricate carvings and guarded by suits of armour which remain there today. A young William Shakespeare is believed to have performed here for the owner Sir Thomas Hesketh. The hall also boasts a dramatic example of an ornate hammer-beam roof. This is the name given to a timber roof when the cross - timbers are raised into an arch in order to give the people within an even greater feeling of space. Westminster Hall and Hampton Court both boast similar hammer beam roofs in their bids for greatness as do many of England’s churches in a more modest way. As seems appropriate for a house which has been in one family for 400 years, Rufford Hall is believed to be haunted by several ghosts. Among these is a young woman who became ill while waiting for her husband to return from war. Promising that she would stay in this world until she could say goodbye to her beloved - she died before he returned. A fine collection of 17th century Oak furniture, tapestries, ancient weapons and a priest-hole all present an excellent backdrop for this and other mysterious stories at Rufford. ”
