“Enclosed by woods, Roche Abbey is beautifully set alongside Maltby Beck. Unusually, there were two local Lords who jointly founded Roche Abbey. Their land met at Maltby Beck and they gave the Monks the choice of whose land they settled on. The Cistercians began work on the abbey in 1147 and took a full 25 years to complete it. Much of the Abbey’s story remains lost as its documents were stored in St Mary’s Tower in York which was destroyed by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War. It is known that the abbey prospered in the 12th and early 13th centuries; until that is Hugh of Wadworth took the reins. He had ambitious plans to expand the Abbey - instead he landed the Abbey in debt having borrowed large sums of money from the Jewish community in York. Despite a period of recovery, the late 13th century brought with it a decline in the Abbey’s fortunes - not only did its wealth decline but it was hit by the Black Death as well. If that wasn’t enough, there were also a series of scandals involving violence, gambling and the carrying of weapons. Following the dissolution, Roche Abbey was completely plundered, a record of which was kept by Michael Sherbrook at the time; “It would have pitied any heart to see the tearing up of the lead, the plucking up of boards and throwing down of the rafters” ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that I didn’t know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“I've used the programme a few times now on my travels and it does add a good deal of value to a journey so I'm very happy with my purchase.”

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey
