Ripley Castle

“The story of the Castle begins with William the Conqueror who granted a large estate at Ripley to Ralph Paganel. In the 1300s, the Pagenels were joined to the Ingilby family by marriage- and the Ingilbys are still there today, after seven centuries. It was Sir Thomas Ingilby who married into the estate and is reputed to have saved King Edward III from a wild boar, when the King fell from his horse. The gatehouse of the Castle was built in 1450 and creates an excellent first impression – along with the towered manor house and beautiful grounds. The Gatehouse was built when its owners, Lancastrian supporters, were given a license to crenellate by Henry VI. The three-storey Tower, attached to the manor house, was finished over 100 years later. Ripley Castle and is inhabitants of 700 years, the Ingilby family, have often featured in the story of England’s turbulent past. One can still see holes in the Gatehouse which were created by Roundheads who were executing Royalists during the Civil War. Some of the shots were over 10 feet too high though- so either they felt a last-minute pang of sympathy or were simply poor shots. One of the most colourful characters from the Ingilby family was ‘Trooper’ Jane Ingilby, born in 1601, who fought at Martson Moor disguised as a man in armour. On retreating to the Castle, the story goes that she held Oliver Cromwell at gunpoint defending her brother. If you visit the local pub, the Boar’s Head, you can enjoy a beer named after Trooper Jane, called Crack-shot. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
