Rievaulx Terrace & Temples

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Overlooking the glorious remains of the abbey are the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples which curve across the wooded hillside, providing splendid views of the Ryedale valley below. At each end of the half-mile terrace, standing in elegant clearings, are two classical Georgian temples. At one end of the Terrace is the Ionic Temple, which was inspired by the Roman Temple of Portunus – god of ports and harbours. It is designed as a banqueting hall and has finely decorated ceilings including frescoes depicting mythological scenes. Strange though it may seem to have a dining room on the top of a hill, it was meant for practical use, as a place to enjoy lunch after a stroll. At the other end is a Tuscan Temple whose floor comes from the nearby Abbey ruins. The man with the grandiose vision was Thomas Duncombe III who, on his return from his Grant Tour in Europe, spent eight years building the Terrace. His goal seems to have been to out-do his grandfather’s designs at nearby Duncombe Park which is just a mile across the valley. It is even thought he may have had plans to join the two terraces with an enormous viaduct. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
