Richmond Castle

“In 1069, English dissenters slaughtered a Norman garrison based at York which was to prove a serious mistake and underestimation of their ruthlessness. As a result, the Normans started the ‘Harrying of the North’; a process of subjugation, slaughter and redistribution of lands which reportedly reduced the survivors to starvation and even cannibalism. Alain Le Roux, who led the brutal suppression, was given the borough of Richmond as a reward and immediately started to build Richmond Castle to cement his power. He became immensely wealthy and was recently rated as the richest man ever by Philip Beresford in his book, The Richest of the Rich. By the time of his death his wealth represented 7% of the net national income of England, the equivalent today of over £80 billion. Richmond castle’s original fortifications were later improved with a 100 foot high keep and walls eleven feet across completed by King Henry II. He also added a Barbican which is a defensive tower situation slightly outside of the main castle walls in order to protect the gatehouse through which all visitors must pass. Built on solid rock, Richmond Castle still stands proud today towering above the town and the River Swale, 100 feet below. It has remained in such robust condition, that during World War I, it was used as a Prison for conscientious objectors. 16 of these prisoners were sentenced to death until public protest led to their sentences being substituted for 10 years hard labour. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
