Prudhoe Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“King Henry I granted the barony of Prudhoe to Robert d’Umfraville who proceeded to rebuild the original wooden fort at Prudhoe into a more serious fortification. Situated close the border with Scotland and strategically placed on a steep ridge on the River Tyne, this castle was destined to see a lot of military action. The strengthening of the castle was to prove worthwhile when William the Lion of Scotland invaded with the aim of taking Northumberland. Odinel II, head of the Umfravilles, rejected loyalty to the Scots and as a consequence was twice besieged in 1173 and then 1174. The first time, the Scots had not been prepared to meet with such a mighty and well protected castle – by their second attempt, the castle’s fortifications had been further improved. They were unsuccessful on both occasions. These defeats led the Scots to say; “As long as Prudhoe stands, we shall never have peace.” In 1398, the male line of the Umfravilles died and the powerful Percy family took control. Four times the Percies took on the King of England – each time losing control of Prudhoe. This continued until Thomas Percy’s involvement in the Rising of the North which led to his execution. Thereafter the castle was let out to tenants and gradually left to ruin. Today, it is owned by the Duke of Northumberland and, along with the numerous castles which were built to defend this part of the border, is a legacy to a dark and embattled period in this region’s history. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
