Pickering Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Pickering Castle was built by the Normans to subdue major uprisings against their rule in the northern region. This campaign, known as the Harrying of the North, was led by Alain le Roux three years after the initial Norman Conquest at Hastings. At the time, it was a region of free farmers and the harrying was aimed at suppressing their independent way of life. The Normans followed a scorched earth policy which involved burning whole villages and killing everyone in them. This led to a huge de-population of the area estimated at 150,000 which was still evident hundreds of years later when compared to the South. Set in an attractive position by the moors, near the ancient town of Pickering, the castle is a great example of the classic Motte and Bailey style with basic earth ramparts. Further development of the Castle was undertaken in following centuries such as the Coleman Tower. Situated by the original entrance, this would have probably housed the soldiers who were guarding the castle, with the prison being below. By the 17th century, castles such as this were no longer a significant part of warfare and Pickering Castle was left to decline for 250 years. Eventually it was rescued by English Heritage and now houses an exhibition in the chapel. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
