Nether Alderley Mill

“Grade II listed Nether Alderley Mill is an important corn mill, parts of which date back to the 15th century. Demonstrating a unique tandem design, this watermill is one of only four virtually complete corn mills in Cheshire, and was in active use until 1939. It has a stone flagged, low pitched roof weighing a massive 200 tons. Underneath it the old mill machinery has now been fully restored to working order. It is now powered by a pair of overshot Victorian water wheels, which are fed by the mill pond behind the building. The mill grinds flour for demonstration purposes. In many countries, corn mills or flour mills are also known as gristmills – a gristmill being a building where grain is ground into flour. The first water powered gristmills in Europe were built towards the end of the second century BC. Vertical wheels were in use in the Roman Empire by the end of the 1st century BC, and in England, the Domesday survey of 1086 says there were there were 5,624 water-powered flour mills - about one for every 300 inhabitants. These early mills were almost always built and supported by farming communities, and typically a percentage of each farmer's grain called a ‘miller's toll’ was set aside for the miller in lieu of wages. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
