“Atmospheric Mount Grace Priory is the best preserved and most accessible of the ten Carthusian charterhouses in England. It was founded in 1398, and lies hidden away between the North York Moors and the Cleveland Way National Trail. It was the last monastery to be established in Yorkshire before the Reformation. The Carthusian order was founded by Saint Bruno of Cologne in 1084, and open to both men and women. Unlike other orders, such as the Cistercians and Augustinians, its members lived virtually as hermits. Each occupied a ‘two-up, two-down' cell, complete with small garden, where they lived, worked, and prayed. Although not much remains above foundation level at Mount Grace, 23 cells are clearly defined, 15 of them being located around the edge of the great cloister. The monks were very conscious of hygiene and sanitation so an unusual and interesting feature of Mount Grace Priory is the complex water system and latrine channels that can still be made out around the site. The priory was closed in 1539 when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. The guesthouse was incorporated into two separate houses, one a 17th century manor and the other a larger house, built early in the 19th century - an important example of the Arts and Crafts movement. An on-site reconstruction at the priory shows a sample cell and a small herb garden. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

Linda, New Jersey
