“Once home to King Richard III, and sometimes known as the ‘Windsor of the North’, Middleham Castle dates back to the 11th century. Here, Richard spent part of his youth under the guardianship of ‘the Kingmaker’. The future king was particularly fond of Middleham, and the round tower, traditionally known as the Prince's Tower, is said to be where his son, Prince Edward was born and died. The first castle was a wooden structure built in 1069 by Alan Rufus, a nephew of William the Conqueror, but by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Middleham had passed to his brother, Ribald. The grandson of Ribald, Robert Fitzrandoloph built a new castle and, during the 15th century, this developed into a luxurious, fortified palace. It was home to the great lords, Salisbury, Warwick, and Gloucester. The castle remained in royal hands until the reign of James I, after which it fell into disuse and disrepair. Much of the stone was taken from its walls - some local properties in the area still have huge mantel stones around the fireplace that were once part of the great castle! In 1925, the castle ruins were acquired by the Office of Works, now English Heritage. An exhibition about notable personalities from the castle’s past includes a replica of the beautiful Middleham Jewel, a 15th-century pendant decorated with a large sapphire found near the castle. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
