“Lindisfarne Castle sits prettily at the far end of Lindisfarne, known also as Holy Island. In medieval days, this was a highly volatile border area, with the English and Scots at loggerheads, and the Vikings attacking from the sea. The Irish evangelist, St Aidan, set up the first monastery, here, but Viking raids forced the monks to abandon the island in 875, and it was nearly 200 years before St Cuthbert rebuilt the Priory, which lasted until the Dissolution. Lindisfarne Castle was built in the mid 1500s to safeguard the harbour, which sheltered English ships, and stones from the now disused priory were used as building material. When King James the Sixth of Scotland also became King of England in 1603, the two kingdoms were united and Lindisfarne Castle lost its importance as a border fort - although a garrison remained at the castle until the late 19th century. Edward Hudson, the founder of Country Life magazine, discovered the castle in 1901, and asked Edward Lutyens to convert it into a comfortable holiday home. Lutyens used stone, brick, slate and wood to recreate a rustic life-style, and the small rooms look down upon the charming walled garden planned by Gertrude Jekyll. The future George the Fifth and Queen Mary visited in 1908 – but were apparently alarmed by the slope and the cobbled stones, which had no handrails or protection! ”
