Leighton Hall

“The magnificent home of the world-renowned Gillow furniture-making family, Leighton Hall has everything - romantic Gothic towers, acres of gardens, trained birds of prey, and tales of hidden priests. The origins of Leighton Hall date back to the 13th century when a fortified manor occupied the site. The house was destroyed by government troops during the Jacobite Rising in 1715 and was later rebuilt in 1763. During this period of religious turmoil, the inhabitants of Leighton hall remained staunchly Catholic, risking their lives to preserve the faith. In fact, records show that every owner of Leighton – with one exception has been Roman Catholic. The Jacobite connection is today represented by a case which contains a lock of James II’s hair, set in gold and buttons which were given to Leighton Hall’s then owner by the King’s son James Stuart. In 1822, the Leighton Hall passed to the Gillow family who founded the famous furniture company Gillow & Co. of Lancaster. Nowadays, the house is full of examples of Gillow wooden furniture and visitors are encouraged by the present owners to make themselves at home. Outside, the beautifully kept grounds stretch over 1500 acres and, weather permitting, trained birds of prey give breath-taking flying displays every afternoon. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
