Lanercost Priory

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Fifteen miles south of the Scottish Border, nestling close to Hadrian’s Wall, the Augustinian priory of Lanercost was sacked at least four times during border disputes between the English and Scottish. Famous foes include William Wallace and Robert the Bruce who attacked the priory during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Nowadays, the beautifully preserved Lanercost Priory is regarded as a ‘hidden Cumbrian gem’. Highlights include a statue of its patron saint, Mary Magdalene, which was carved in 1270, and three stained glass windows by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Founded for a company of Augustinian monks by Robert de Vaux, around 1166, it was built it mostly from stone scavenged from nearby parts of Hadrian's Wall. During his last campaign in 1306, the mortally ill Edward I rested here for six months, before dying at Burgh-by-Sands as he prepared to enter Scotland. Lanercost was one of the first priories to be dissolved by Henry VIII, who gave the buildings and the land to Sir Thomas, Lord Dacre, the illegitimate son of Lord Dacre of Naworth. Sir Thomas turned part of the Priory into a country mansion, and moved there in 1559 but was killed shortly thereafter at Flodden Field. The male side of the family died out in 1716, and trees and shrubs soon claimed the site. However, the ruined priory church was partly reclaimed in 1740, and the nave and north aisle were roofed to serve as a parish church which is still in use today. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
