“Kirkham Priory was founded in the 1120’s by local nobleman Walter l’Espec in memory of his only son. The story goes that he was killed close to this site by the River Derwent when his horse was startled by a boar. As Lord of Helmsley, l’Espec later established two other houses of the Cistercian Order - one was the great Rievaulx Abbey close to his estate, and the other was a smaller abbey in Bedfordshire. Kirkham continued as a priory until the time of Dissolution in December 1539. There is now little left of the priory except for the impressive facade of the 13th century gatehouse, which shows the heraldry of the Roos family of Helmsley Castle, and a handsome set of monastic washbasins. The ground plan of Kirkham Priory shows that it was apparently an ornate place for worship, work, and living, and a perfect example of this is the late 13th century, twin-bayed toilet set in the west wall of the cloister. During the Second World War, the peace was shattered at Kirkham when the ruined site became a key training area for troops as they prepared for the D-Day landings. Winston Churchill and King George VI made a secret trip to Kirham to inspect the military tanks, jeeps and wading vehicles which were integral to the allied victory in Normandy. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
