Hutton in the Forest

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Hutton-in-the-Forest is supposedly the Green Knight's Castle in the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from King Arthur’s fables. Only two families have lived here during the whole of the property’s 700 years. Thomas de Hoton designed the original moated Pele tower in the 14th century. Then, in 1605, a wealthy Cockermouth merchant, Richard Fletcher, bought the castle and it has been home to the Fletchers, Lord Inglewood’s family, ever since. Now a comfortable country house in a quiet village of Cumbria, it is dominated by two massive towers – one, the medieval tower surviving from the 14th century and the other a Neo Gothic tower built in the 19th century. The changing centuries have left their mark inside and outside the castle. The Gothic wings were added by famous architect, Anthony Salvis in the 1800s, and William Morris designed the décor of the east and west wings. There is much period furniture on show, and family portraits which gaze down on fine displays of china, weaponry, and late 17th century tapestries. The grounds contain three ponds, one with an 18th century cascade, and topiary sculptures clipped from shrubs and trees. The terraces were re-modeled by Gilpin in the 19th century, and there is a walled garden, a dovecote capable of housing 400 birds, and a woodland walk, which meanders through the medieval forest of Inglewood. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey

“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
