Housesteads Roman Fort

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Housesteads’ Fort is all that is left of a Roman outpost, located halfway along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. It is the best preserved of 13 outposts along the wall. Here, you can explore granaries, barracks, a hospital, and even a multi-seated latrine – one of the earliest known flushing toilets. The fort was built in stone around AD124 to provide support for Roman legionaries working on Hadrian’s Wall. A substantial civilian settlement existed to the south, outside the fort, and some of the stone foundations can still be seen. These include the "Murder House", where excavations turned up two skeletons beneath what had been – at the time - a newly laid floor. The fort's orientation is unorthodox, with its long axis parallel to Hadrian's Wall, probably due to the lie of the land. It is also unusual in that it has no running water supply, and is dependent upon rainwater collection. A series of large stone-lined tanks around the periphery of the defences fulfil this purpose. The large building to the east of the settlement may have been a bathhouse, for which water was probably provided by long-gone springs. There is also a museum, which shows how Housesteads once looked. The Fort was garrisoned right up to the end of the Roman occupation of Britain, in the early years of the fifth century. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
