Gibside

“One of England’s greatest 18th century landscapes can be found at the estate and forest garden of Gibside, near Scarborough. Situated by the River Derwent, Gibside contains 15 miles of parks and forest walks. Wildly dramatic, ‘romantic ruins’ are scattered throughout the woodlands but a more sinister drama attaches to Gibson’s Palladian chapel and crypt. According to locals, the crypt became known for satanic rituals! An ancestor of the Queen Mother – George Bowes – created the Gibson estate from a fortune made in coal-mining. In the newly refurbished Orangery, one can learn about Mary Bowes, the ’Unhappy Countess’ of Gibson. Ignored by her husband to his death, it was almost certainly her new inheritance which attracted the adventurer, Andrew Stoney. He misled her into marrying him and then did his best to obtain her estate from her - including imprisoning Mary in her own home and kidnapping her - for which he eventually died in prison following a scandalous court case. Her story inspired Thackeray to write The Luck of Barry Lyndon on hearing about it from her grandson. Among Gibside’s glories is the Column of Liberty - taller than Nelson’s column, a fine Banqueting House, and the Jacobean Hall. Outdoor life is far more tranquil including red squirrels, kingfishers, and other wildlife in and around the ponds and the Great Avenue of Turkey Oaks. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
