East Riddlesden

“A 17th-century British manor house now owned by the National Trust, East Riddlesden Hall is flamboyant both in looks and in reputation. Sitting perched on a small plateau overlooking a bend in the River Aire on its way downstream from the town of Keighley, the hall was built in 1642 by a wealthy Halifax clothier, James Murgatroyd. He was reputed to be a Royalist, and the symbols and graffiti throughout the building bear this out. However, The Murgatroyds of Riddlesden Hall were better known as rogues in the 17th century. Accused of bad language and debauchery, various members of the family were fined, imprisoned, and excommunicated from the church. The full truth may never be known but the Murgatroyd family are said to have been the inspiration for Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, Ruddigore – also known as the Witches Curse- in which the evil of ancestors is revisited upon following family member- and Riddlesden Hall’s place in the limelight continued in the film, Wuthering Heights which was filmed there in1992. Riddlesden stands in delightful grounds with mature beech trees, and a range of 17th century outbuildings. The most important of these is a magnificent, oak framed tithe barn, one of the finest in the north of England. The ruined façade of the Starkie wing, covered in clematis, honeysuckle, and roses, provides a dramatic backdrop to the garden. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
