“Durham Cathedral is known as one of the greatest Norman building in Europe and in 2001 it was voted as Britain’s best-loved building. Together with Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green, it is an icon of north-east England and was designated a UNESCO world heritage site. The Cathedral’s origins date back to a community of monks in the 9th century who were driven out of their seat by Viking raids. Carrying the remains of Saint Cuthbert, they eventually settled on a peninsula of land created by a loop of the River Wear in Durham. The present cathedral which occupies the same spot, was founded in 1093 and still houses the shrine of the North’s best-loved saint, Cuthbert, in whose honour pilgrims have travelled to Durham for centuries. The 16th century Reformation brought an end to the Priory and several hundred years of monastic life at the cathedral. However, when it was opened again in January 1541, the last Prior became its first Dean of Durham, and twelve former monks became the first Canons. During the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell closed the Cathedral again, and locked up three thousand Scottish prisoners in the main building. This was a particularly dark time in the cathedral’s history – conditions were so appalling inside the cathedral that more than half the prisoners died from disease and malnutrition. By the mid19th century, the Bishops of Durham had become powerful ‘prince-bishops’, and the seat is still regarded as the fourth most significant in the Church of England hierarchy. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

Sam, Manchester
