Corbridge Roman Site

| PLAY AUDIO |
“ The first Roman presence in Corbridge has been dated to AD79, when a small military fort and bath house were erected. The site predates Hadrian's Wall, and there is evidence of Iron Age round houses there even before the Romans arrived. Corbridge lies at an important crossroads marking northbound Dere Street and the Stanegate in the Tyne Valley. It played a vital role in every Roman campaign in northern Britain, as it was the main town and supply base for the garrisons of the central sector. It was just to the North of Hadrian’s wall. This made it an ideal place for canny locals to develop lucrative trade links with travellers and troops passing through. After some years major alterations were made to the old fort. These included the construction of two large Granaries, a Fountain House, and a large courtyard complex believed to be the Forum, much of which can still be seen. Today visitors can view the central area of Corbridge Roman Site on either side of 'Stanegate' (the main street). The Granaries are particularly impressive with their raised floors, as are the remains of the Fountain House with its aqueduct. Also on site are displays showing the extent of the Roman conquest of Britain, and the expansion of the site over the years. A museum modelled on a Roman building, houses archaeological finds. ”
