“Fine horses still roam around Chesters, a former Roman cavalry fort set in parkland on the banks of the North Tyne. Its six-acre area housed a cavalry regiment of around 500 men for 300 years until the 3rd century AD. Chesters’ remarkable state of preservation is due almost entirely to John Clayton. He was fascinated by the vestiges of a Roman presence in the neighbourhood. In the early 1800s, his father, Nathaniel Clayton, owner of Chesters House and Estate, moved hundreds of tons of earth to cover the fort as part of his parkland landscaping. When he died, John removed all of his father’s work, exposing the fort and excavating. He established a small museum for the Roman artefacts he had found. Clayton also made a number of excavations at other ‘digs’, which include Housesteads Fort, the Mithraic Temple at Carrawborough and Carvoran. And he did all of this in his spare time, devoting himself to archaeology only on Mondays. There is a lot to see on the ground at Chesters. All four gateways and the foundations of the Cavalry headquarters building are visible. A courtyard, hall, regimental temple, and strongroom are clearly laid out. The commandant’s house is the most luxurious building in the fort. Down by the river, the changing rooms, steam rooms and the bathing areas of the bath house are also extremely well preserved. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
