“The renowned English wood engraver, Thomas Bewick was born at Cherryburn House in Mickley village. Although a poor scholar, Bewick showed an early talent for drawing. At 14, young Thomas was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. Beilby was only 11 years older than Bewick, and worked mainly with silver and copper. The breakthrough for Bewick came when he engraved a series of diagrams on wood for Dr. Charles Hutton, an English mathematician. From then on, he devoted himself entirely to wood engraving. In 1776, he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A keen ornithologist, work by Bewick on such books as the History of British Birds is still revered for the quality of the engraving. Much of his work features everyday scenes from the countryside of his childhood. Bewick had numerous pupils, several of whom gained distinction as engravers. They include William Harvey and his son, Robert Elliott Bewick, who became a partner in the firm. Cherryburn is run by the National Trust and, on Demonstration Days, visitors can see the 18th century printing press at work. A 19th-century farmhouse near Cherryburn later became the Bewicks’ home. This houses an exhibition about Bewick's life and work, and prints of his original wood engravings. Families visiting Cherryburn will find friendly farmyard animals, garden and picnic areas. They can also explore the walking trails that Thomas Bewick so loved. ”
