Castle Howard

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Castle Howard is a baroque work of art, more palace than house, set in more than 1,000 acres of beautiful gardens. It centres on a striking dome, with two wings enclosing a courtyard. To the north, the ground falls away to a large lake. To the south, formal gardens merge into more water features, and several superb follies. Still home to the family whose forbears built it, the current trustees are the Hon. Nicholas and Simon Howard. The grand house and its estate became known to millions in Britain and abroad during the screening of the 1970s TV series, Brideshead Revisited. Much of its landscape is protected, and it has many buildings and monuments that are regarded as international treasures. Conceived by Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, the majority of Castle Howard’s buildings were designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. Its construction took more than 100 years. In 1940, a calamitous fire destroyed the dome, and nearly 20 rooms. After the deaths of his two brothers in action during World War Two, George Howard began a restoration and conservation programme that was completed in 1962. Many visitors to the 10,000 acre estate are surprised to learn of the size of the operation 'behind the scenes'. Castle Howard is now one of the largest employers in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire. In addition to running farms, forestry, and many properties, it hosts nearly 200,000 visitors each year. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey

“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
