Carlisle Castle

“Formidable and foreboding, the huge stone outline of Carlisle Castle marks the front line of Anglo-Scottish warfare. During its 900 year history, it has seen some of the most dramatic fighting in British history. During both the Civil War and the Jacobite Rising, Carlisle Castle of Cumbria fell into Scottish hands but it has mostly been 'English' since the 12th century. The castle played a prominent part in the English Civil War. Besieged for eight months in 1645 by Parliamentary forces, the starving Royalist garrison finally surrendered after eating the castle’s supply of rats, and even the dogs. A century later, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite garrison held out against Duke of Cumberland’s Hanoverian army in 1745. Visitors can still see the infamous ‘licking stones’ of Carlisle. Jailed without water, thirsty Jacobite prisoners desperately licked the stone walls for moisture to stay alive - only to be slaughtered later on Gallows Hill. Built on the site of a Roman fort dating from the first century AD, the first castle was raised from earth and timber by William the Conqueror’s second son, King William ‘Rufus’ in 1092. Just thirty years later, it was replaced with the stone walls and keep which remain today. Henry VIII later adapted the castle for artillery in around 1540, and his daughter, Mary Queen of Scots was confined here in 1568 after her flight from Scotland. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
