Byland Abbey

| PLAY AUDIO |
“At its peak, over 200 monks and lay brothers were housed at Byland Abbey, a great Cistercian abbey in Yorkshire. It was one of the earliest Gothic buildings in the north. Its combination of rounded Romanesque and pointed Gothic arches shows how architectural styles can change over a short time. Byland’s great circular rose window, which survives only in part, was probably the model for York Minster’s rose window. The abbey was founded in 1135. It gained fame for the quality of its sheep rearing and wool exports. It also gained a degree of infamy for taking in the renegade Bishop Wimund (after the Scots deprived him of his sight, manhood, and property). During the Middle Ages, the monks experienced many misfortunes, some of their own making, but others caused by war, famine, and plague. During the Dissolution of the monasteries, Byland was valued at £238 nine shillings and fourpence. According to the Duke of Norfolk it more hospitable than any other house in the region. Today, Byland Abbey is a shadow of its former self but is still well worth a visit. Of particular interest are the 13th century floor tiles in the abbey church. Despite its ruined state Byland is still a hospitable place - visitors can down a warm Byland Brew next door at the first English Heritage gastro-pub. The orange and hop flavoured beverage is an ideal body warmer during cold weather. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
