Brinkburn Priory

| PLAY AUDIO |
“Brinkburn Priory lies on a small haugh, a hollow in a bend of the River Coquet, four miles east of Rothbury. Tradition tells of a party of marauding Scots who were unable to find the 12th century Priory. The band failed in their bid to plunder, and set off for home. But when they heard the sound of bells, which the monks rang in joy at their departure, the Scots returned. Mayhem and pillage were the order of the day, and the Priory burned. However, this story should be taken with a pinch of salt: similar tales are told about other priories. During another of their raids, the ever-present Scots flung the Priory bells into the river at a spot now called Bell Pool. Tradition says that whoever recovers the bells will be rewarded with many other treasures. Like many religious institutions in England, Brinkburn Priory was confiscated from the church by King Henry VIII in the 1530s. At the time it was worth only £69. Two hundred years later, just 50 yards from the church, a bronze pot was found containing almost 300 Rose Nobles. Each was worth ten shillings when they were minted in 1466 - a fortune in those days. Today what’s left of the Priory can be reached by a scenic, 10-minute walk from the car park. Parts of the monastic buildings are incorporated into an elegant manor house. Music festivals are now held there on an annual basis. Next to it is the Priory’s beautiful12th-century church. It has now been completely re-roofed and restored by English Heritage. ”

know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
