“Housed in a magnificent French style chateau, The Bowes Museum is perhaps the most beautiful in England. Its story is, at heart, one of love - between John Bowes, illegitimate son of the Earl of Strathmore, and a French actress called Joséphine. Joséphine Coffin-Chevallier was working at the Théatre des Variétés in Paris when she fell in love with its owner, John Bowes. He was a successful businessman, having inherited his father’s estates, but not his title. The couple married and discovered a shared love of art. They came up with the idea of creating a world-class museum in Teesdale to expose the local population to the wonders of art At the foundation ceremony Joséphine said ‘I lay the bottom stone, and you, Mr.Bowes, will lay the top stone’. Sadly, it was not to be, as firstly she, then her husband, died before it was finished. However, such was their love of art, that they had already collected over 15,000 exhibits. This created such a buzz that on its opening day in 1892, 63,000 people came to visit the museum they had dreamed of. ”

Graham, London

“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
