Birdoswald Roman Fort

| PLAY AUDIO |
“For a quick lesson in the building of Roman defences, it would be hard to find better than Birdoswald - also known as Banna which means ‘Tongue’. This is a reflection of its spectacular location above the River Irthing affording an excellent view over the unruly tribes below. Birdoswald has the best preserved defences of any Wall fort along Hadrian’s Wall. It was an important base for about 1,000 Roman soldiers over 300 years. A Roman fort, turret, and milecastle can all be seen on this excellent stretch of the Wall. Beginning life nearly 2000 years ago as a Roman Fort, Birdoswald has since been home to Dark Age Chieftains, Border Reivers and Victorian farmers. The Border Reivers were raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border for nearly three hundred years. When out raiding, or riding, as it was termed, the Reivers rode light on hardy ponies renowned for the ability to pick their way over the boggy moss lands. Many Reivers later became mercenaries or were forced to serve in the army. This enforced service was handed down as a penalty in lieu of their families being put to death. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”
Steve, UK
“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester

“The Audio commentary on the Garmin was well narrated and definitely had the feel of the audio
guides you get when you are walking around the landmarks themselves”.
Linda, New Jersey

“The heritage commentary is really informative and entertaining – it’s great to discover
the background to the brown tourist signs we normally whizz by on the motorway.”
Michael, Reading
