Berwick Barracks

“Berwick is the northernmost town in England and a fascinating place to explore on foot. Highly picturesque, it has been an important military town since the earliest days of war between the English and the Scots. Soldiers of the garrison were originally billeted in local taverns and private houses. This was expensive for the locals, and led to many complaints. These complaints finally reached government, and architect Nicholas Hawksmoor was despatched to Berwick. He created the first ever, purpose-built infantry barracks in England. Work finished in 1721, and The Barracks have been integral to Berwick ever since. Nearly 200 years after The Barracks were finished a gym was built to provide exercise for active soldiers stationed in the town. The Gymnasium’s floor is still inscribed with the original paintwork. Nowadays the Barracks have a more creative than military function: Fellowship artists are invited to live and work there over the winter months - with the gymnasium functioning as a working studio. Art exhibitions are held during the summer. The Barracks also house the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Museum, the Contemporary Art Gallery, and the Berwick Borough Museum with its own fine art works. Nearby, is The Main Guard, a Georgian Guard House with an exhibition about the ups and downs of life in a border, garrison town. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
“The content is good and the level of detail about right, enough to pique your interest but not so much
that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
