“The façade of Beningbrough Hall cuts a certain Italian dash to the Yorkshire fields along the River Ouse. After a Grand Tour of Europe, John Bourchier returned full of ideas for a new house in the style of a Roman palace. His imposing Georgian mansion replaced a country house that had been home to the Bourchier family for 150 years. It is thought that York carpenter and architect, William Thornton, designed the mansion, which has cantilevered stairs, baroque interiors, and central corridors that run the entire length of the house. Exceptional wood carvings are on show throughout. Now owned by the National Trust, the house and gardens are open to the public displaying around 130 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery. This includes works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Ramsay, and Kneller, sitting alongside portraits of Samuel Pepys, Handel, and the poet Alexander Pope. Seven interactive galleries operate on the first and top floors, with lifts to provide easy access. Activity days, evening concerts, and special restaurant themes are on offer throughout the year. There is a Victorian laundry, and a walled garden that grows vegetables for Beningbrough Hall’s restaurant. And last, but not least, there is a wonderful wilderness area with a fort for children to play in. ”

Sam, Manchester
