Aydon Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“This fine example of a 13th century, fortified English manor house stands in a secluded woodland setting. Aydon Castle was built by Robert de Reymes, a wealthy Suffolk merchant, at the end of an unusually long period of peace in the border regions. Work began on the castle, which has a spectacular outlook over a steep valley, in 1295. It was originally undefended with three sides standing against the steep banks of the Cor Burn. The outbreak of Anglo-Scottish warfare pushed its owner into somewhat fruitless defensive action. In 1315, Aydon Castle was pillaged and burnt by the Scots. Two years later, the English rebels seized it. The Scots returned in 1346. Eventually an outer bailey curtain wall was added to guard the open side of the castle with a plain, arched gateway, and a D-shaped, rectangular tower was built behind it. The two storey hall block, and kitchen wing with its embattled ‘curtain wall’, make an inner courtyard, with the remnants of a middle courtyard to the west. The result is a building with solid fortifications but the feel of a medieval home. From the 18th century, Aydon became a farmhouse and remained so until 1966. Since then, it has been restored to its original form. Aydon Castle has survived the centuries in remarkably good shape, largely due to its later use as a farmhouse. It remained in private ownership until 1975 and is now owned by English Heritage. ”

“Brilliant information, have used several of the pubs and visited many of the properties. Some that
I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
