St George's Guildhall

“St. George’s Guildhall has been a centre for the arts for centuries. It was built in 1421 on land reclaimed from the Great Ouse River, and had an undercroft that allowed boats to moor inside the building. It is the largest surviving medieval guildhall in England and now part of King’s Lynn Arts Centre. The hall was the venue for many medieval plays. One of the earliest performances was a nativity play, and it is rumoured that Shakespeare’s company also performed there. Dinners, dances and meetings were staged at St. George’s until 1547, when Edward VI dissolved the guilds of England, and the building became a town hall. In the civil war the hall served as a storehouse for the Royalists’ guns and ammunition. It then operated as a county court for a while before reverting to its original use as a theatre. The local mayor commissioned the architect Thomas Sharpe to build a playhouse and in 1774 one of England’s greatest actors at the time, George Cooke, trod the boards there. The building fell into neglect before being restored and reopened as an arts centre by the Queen Mother in 1951. It still sports its original roof – so heavy that it has to be supported by five buttresses. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London
