Framlingham Castle

| PLAY AUDIO |
“With a rich history spanning almost 1500 years, one of Framlingham’s earliest residents was Edmund the Martyr, King of East Anglia. He was captured and tortured by the Great Heathen Army before being strapped to a tree and killed by a hail of arrows. Later, the unfortunate king was made a saint and his body re-buried at Bury St Edmunds. The shrine became a focus for hundreds of pilgrims. Today visitors to Framlingham can see remains of a castle built in the 12th century by Roger Bigod, the first Earl of Norfolk. The castle is notable for its curtain wall and mural towers and became a key feature in a power struggle between the Bigods and the crown. The fifth Earl of Norfolk, also called Roger Bigod, gained notoriety for disobeying an order from Edward I to fight the King of France. However, Edward had the last laugh when the estate was handed back to the crown after the earl died without an heir. Since then the castle has had a succession of owners, including the Mowbray and Howard families who both took the title Duke of Norfolk. Mary Tudor also made use of the castle in 1553 when she gathered her supporters there just before being crowned queen. ”

I didn’t
know were so close to home. Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
